August 2007 - 'Dashboard release' for end of August
July was vacation time. There was not much development going on for Bookpiles.

There was no release end of July. The next release is planned for end of August. This release is called 'Dashboard release'. More dashboards are added to Bookpiles, to give an overview what's going on with your books stored in Bookpiles.

July 2007 - One year Bookpiles

The first version of Bookpiles has been released one year ago, end of June, 2006. This was version 0.8. Development had started some months prior.
In one year a lot has been achieved. There were six releases and new functionality has been added: book preview, a dashboard, book folders and book data from public libraries; a German and a Turkish version.

I thank all for the received support: translations, suggestions and bug reports. Some ideas for the next year are: E-book support, web page like browsing and a book desktop.

The next release is planned for end of July with more dashboards.

June 2007 - Bookpiles 1.15 published - Book Preview Release
Bookpiles 1.1 has a new book detail window, but I forgot the 'detail html' template for the release. Instead of a local html page with book data and a thumbnail there was an error message. By the time I found the error I has already done a book preview and the main dashboard.
Since mid May Bookpiles version 1.15 is available. The 'detail window' bug is fixed and two new features are available.
A book preview on the main window and
a dashboard which gives an overview about the book in a Bookpiles database. It shows different book counts, the last 10 books and a chart with books per month. The chart is active, a double click on a month shows the books for this month.

For release 1.2 I will add some more dashboards.
May 2007 - Overview about books in database

My book database is growing and I want to have some overview about what's in the database and what's going on; especially because I use more than one database.

So I will develop an overview form with book counts for summary and with e.g. a list of the most recent books. Something like a (digital) dashboard.

Any suggestions which books counts are required for an overview or which books should be highlighted?

April 2007 - Bookpiles 1.1 and BookGears 0.81 published
I have published Bookpiles 1.1 and BookGears 0.81 end of March.
Bookpiles 1.1 contains three new functions.
Most important are 'Book folders' to organize books into folders. This is comparable to files in directories for Windows Explorer or e-mails in mail folders in Outlook. Bookpiles keeps book in book folders.
Its possible to create, move, rename and delete book folders. New books show up in folder Incoming Books and can be moved or copied to other folders. Deleted books are moved to the folder Deleted Books.
Book Detail: A new windows with all information about one book in Bookpiles: general data, a thumbnail
, Amazon Reviews and Bookcrossing Journals if available.
ISBN Import: Direct import of books with ISBN.

BookGears 0.81 has some small bug fixes.
March 2007 - Development of 'Book Detail View'

Currently information for one book is shown on different forms. The basic data is shown on a grid. Amazon reviews and Bookcrossing journals are shown on different forms. This makes is difficult to see all the different data for one book.

A new ‘Book Detail View’ will show all data for one book on one form: General data, dealer related data, Amazon reviews and Bookcrossing journals and library data. This is a form which looks like a web page, and in fact is a local web page generated from the data in the Bookpiles database.
At least a first ‘Book Detail’ version should be available for the next release end of March.

February 2007 - Development of 'Book Tree'
Bookpiles needs additional functionality to organize books - a Book Tree.
It will be a 'Book Tree' similar to the Mail Folders in Outlook. New books are added to the 'Incoming Books' folder and can be moved or copied to other folders. When a book is deleted it is moved to the  'Deleted Books' folder and only books deleted from this folder are deleted permanently.
Different to Outlook: The same book can be in more than one folder.
This new feature is planned for the release end of March.

January 2007 - BookGears 0.8 and Bookpiles 1.0 released
BookGears 0.8 and Bookpiles 1.0 has been released on December 22nd, 2007.

December 2006 -  Next releases prior to Christmas

The next versions – Bookpiles 1.0 and BookGears 0.8  will be release prior to Christmas. Bookpiles can then store Information about books from public libraries like location, edition, status, signature and due date.

To store this information the database has to be changed, Bookpiles does this automatically. All data from the current database is copied to a new database. The old database remains unchanged.

November 2006 -  BookGears 0.71 and Bookpiles 0.91 released

I made a bug fix release mid October with BookGears version 0.71 and Bookpiles version 0.91. Sometimes the correct Firebird dll fbclient.dll wasn’t found and sometimes the first database for Bookpiles sample.fdb wasn’t found either.

The next releases are planned for December. Bookpiles should be able to store and display book data from public libraries.

Bookgears needs some more parameters to process data from library web pages correctly, e.g. different date formats and different formats for author first name and last name.

October 2006 -  BookGears 0.7 and Bookpiles 0.9 released
BookGears is a program which extracts book data from web pages of public libraries while you are browsing them - Internet Explorer reqired. Book data is shown and can be sent to Bookpiles which then stores it.
Since nearly each library has a different web page layout the data is extracted using regular expressions. The regular expressions have to be set up for each library and web page. Currently ? libraries are supported

Bookpiles has been changed to receive and store book data from BookGears.
September 2006 -  'BookGears' registered

The library module will be a separate program with name ‚BookGears’. The project has been registered with SourceForge. BookGears uses regular expressions to extract book related strings from public library web pages. The book data is aggregated and can be sent to Bookpiles, which will save the data in its database.

The first release of BookGears is planned for end of this month together with a new release of Bookpiles to load the received library data.

August 2006 - Development of library module started
I have corrected a few small bugs. Severe errors have not been found for version 0.8 yet. Bookpiles can load book data from Amazon and Bookcrossing, but not from public libraries. This is a medium term goal (let's say end 06). I have already started the development of a library module.
The next release should appear end September with some small corrections and enhancements.

July 2006 - First public version: Bookpiles 0.8
This is the first public version of Bookpiles.
Bookpiles is a Book Organizer, a program to store information about your books. The book data can be added manually or more easily loaded from Amazon or Bookcrossing.
The book data is stored in a database and can be exported to an XML file if required.
Bookpiles is Open Source and Freeware.
The Bookpiles homepage is www.bookpiles.org

I'm using Bookpiles for the last few months and hope that I have found and fixed most errors. Nevertheless this is the first public version, please tell me if you find an error. This web page gives a (monthly) overview what's going on with the Bookpiles project, especially the development.
